When you are a small business owner, you can end up wearing many “hats” and fulfilling many different roles:
Client Care
Administrator
Tech developer
Bookkeeper
Head of Marketing
Head of Sales
Social media content creator
Copy writer
And so on.This can leave us feeling exhausted, time poor and losing the love for what we do. We can end up with a to do list that is a mile long or no to do list because we can never remember everything!
We can find ourselves in a vicious cycle of being busy that is not productive or effective. We can feel like we’re spinning so many plates that to take time out to figure out our next step or how to get out of the vicious cycle would mean one of those plates will fall. We forget that if we don’t slow down soon and/or figure it out soon, we will burn out and ALL the metaphorical plates will come crashing down not just one or two.
So why do we do this to ourselves?
Why, when we feel like we can’t see the wood for the trees, don’t we stop and take time to reflect?
Answer 1: Sometimes it’s because the vicious cycle has become familiar and although it is tough, it is what we know. The fear of what may be on the other side, if we change things, is so great that we choose to stay stuck in the vicious cycle – at least we know how things run there.
Remember the ego/primitive brain does not like change so it prefers us to stay where we are. If we are surviving where we are then why change things? The ego/primitive brain is not interested in us thriving or being happy.
Answer 2: Sometimes it’s because we simply have no idea how to get out of the cycle. We have no idea what the solution to the problem would be or how to find help to solve it. If this sort of behaviour has never been modelled to us or been offered then a part of us may feel that this is how it’s meant to be. Running a business is hard. Running a business takes up all your time. To be successful you have to put the hours in.
My challenge, From Foggy to Focused – a four day sprint to clarity challenge – is all about finding clarity, taking that time to reflect and to be able to see the wood for the trees.
So many heart-centred business owners come to me at breaking point feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, losing the love for their business and lacking clarity about the next right step in their business. They have all the strategy but simply can’t see a way forward. Many of them say something similar to this:
“I can’t see the wood for the trees. There’s so much to do and so little time. How do I get out of this?”
