Money can be a sticky subject, especially when you’re running a business. Many business owners feel guilty for wanting more, as if it makes them “less caring” or “too commercial” but knowing WHY you want the money is as important as knowing why you do what you do.
From a mindset perspective, money is simply energy. It’s an exchange. You share your energy in the form of your knowledge, skills and understanding. Clients give you the equivalent energy back in the form of money. If this energy exchange isn’t balanced (either giving too much or too little) resentment can set in. We have to let the energy flow from us and to us and it has to be balanced – this means we have to ask for a monetary investment that balances out the investment we share.
When you know your why around money, it stops being about greed or guilt. It becomes about alignment.
Ask yourself honestly:
- Do you want money to create freedom and choice in your life?
- Do you want it to reinvest in your studio/clinic/space and give your clients an even better experience?
- Do you want it to support your family, pay for holidays, or reduce stress around bills?
There’s no wrong answer. The problem is when you don’t ask the question at all. That’s when money mindset blocks creep in; undercharging, over-delivering, avoiding price rises.
Many business owners say, “I just want enough.” But what does “enough” mean? Enough to pay bills? Enough to save? Enough to feel safe? Without clarity, “enough” keeps you playing small.
Your why around money expands your vision. It helps you see that charging your worth isn’t selfish, it’s sustainable.
Here’s a quick little exercise for you:
Write down your financial goals for the next year.
Now ask: Why do I want that amount? What will it allow me to do, create, or experience?
The more specific you are, the stronger your mindset becomes.
When you honour your why around money:
- You show up with more confidence.
- You model healthy value exchange for your clients.
- You create abundance that ripples into your family, community, and team.
Money isn’t the end goal, but it is a powerful enabler. The more you’re clear on why you want it, the more confident and grounded your business decisions become.
